A Baccarat game

Baccarat is among the world’s oldest and best-loved card games, and as it developed it was influenced by Spanish, Italian, French and other countries and cultures. As a result, many different languages have influenced its most important terms and phrases. A

  • Action: Describes the total amount of money bet by a gambler in a single session.

B

  • Banco: Spanish word for Banker.
  • Baccarat en Banque: Variation where Baccarat is played at 2 conjoined tables.
  • Burning: Performed after shuffling but before new cards are dealt; refers to the discarding of the top 3 to 6 cards.

C

  • Chemin De Fer: Baccarat variation common in land-based European casinos, where each player gets a turn to act as the Banker. In the United States, it is often referred to by the slang term Chemmy.
  • Coup: Describes a round in Baccarat online or in land-based casinos, where 1 Player and 1 Banker hand are dealt.

D

  • Deux Tableau: Alternative name for Baccarat en Banque.
  • Discard Tray: Where cards that are discarded for any reason, such as burning before a new round, they are placed in this tray.
  • Dragon Bonus: Popular Baccarat online side bet that allows players to bet on how many points the winning hand will exceed the losing hand by; pays out if the winning hand is a Natural or the margin is greater than 4 points.

F

  • Flat Bet: When a player continuously places the same wager, whether they are winning or losing, they are said to be making Flat Bets.

L

  • La Grande: A Natural 9; the best hand in the game.
  • La Petite: A Natural 8; the second-best hand in the game.
  • Loss Bet: Another term for a Player Bet, since it has a higher house edge than a Banker Bet.

M

  • Mini Baccarat: A faster version of the original Baccarat, that offers lower table limits.
  • Monkey: Slang for any 10-value card, whether a face card or a 10.

N

  • Natural: A hand where the first 2 cards that are dealt add up to either 8 or 9. Naturals win and end the round automatically; a Natural 8 will win unless the other hand is a Natural 9.

P

  • Pass: A win in the game of Baccarat.
  • Punto Banco: The most widespread variation of Baccarat online. Punto and Banco translate as Player and Banker, referring to the 2 hands that are involved in the game.
  • Push: A bet that neither wins nor loses. When this happens the amount that you bet is held over and used in the next round, as is also the case in Blackjack.

R

  • Railroad: The English translation of Chemin de Fer; so-named because the shoe looks like a train carriage as it moves around the table from player to player.
  • Run: A side bet that allows players to wager on a series of hands.

S

  • Shoe: Automatic dealing machine used in land-based and live dealer Baccarat online games, in order to prevent human errors associated with manual dealing, that contains 6 or 8 decks.
  • Shooter: A term which may be used to describe the Banker hand.
  • Shuffle Up: Refers to the dealer’s early shuffling of the cards.
  • Standoff: Another name for a tie result in Baccarat.
  • Super Pan Nine: A form of Baccarat that was popularised by the Poker casinos in Los Angeles. Players are dealt 3 face-down cards, which are then scored as in a normal game.
