When the film was released back in 1996, Trainspotting took the world by storm with its gritty subject matter, hurling the cast and director Danny Boyle into stardom. With the hotly-anticipated sequel to be released this week, Lucky Nugget Casino takes a look back to what life was like back in 1996, back in the days before there were mobile casino games available at your fingertips.

Japan’s great year

Unknown
The Nintendo 64 first came out in 1996.

The Nintendo 64 console was released, as one of the last consoles that used cartridge-based games. It was also the year that Pokemon debuted in Japan, and DVDs were launched there, too. It was a great year for that country as, alongside South Korea, they were announced as the host for the FIFA World Cup 2002 – the first World Cup to be held in Asia.

Sports on screen

In 1996, the UEFA European Football Championship took place in England, with Germany going on to win the competition. The summer Olympic Games were held in Atlanta, officially opened by President Bill Clinton, who would go on to serve a second term in the White House following the 1996 presidential election. An estimated 3.5 billion people around the world watched the Atlanta Olympics. America welcomes Major League Soccer, with the first-ever game taking place between San Jose Clash and D.C United.

What were we talking about?

O. J. Simpson’s murder case was called the ‘Trial of the Century’.

NFL star O. J. Simpson’s well-publicised trial began in 1996, where Simpson would later be found not guilty of the murder of his wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of the King of Rock and Roll, filed for divorce from the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Tupac Shakur released the first ever double rap album, All Eyez on Me – but the rapper was tragically gunned down in September, and died of his injuries.

Music moments

What were we listening to in 1996? Spice Girls’ first number 1 single Wannabe, Los Del Rio’s The Macarena, Celine Dion’s Because You Love Me, Oasis’ Wonderwall and Children by Robert Miles. Oasis hosted their huge Knebworth gig in 1996, as well as two concerts at Maine Road, the home of their beloved Manchester City.

At the movies

1996
Mission: Impossible was the third highest-grossing film in 1996.

Some of the films we were watching (aside from the seminal Trainspotting) included Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo + Juliet, Disney’s 101 Dalmatians and the Helen Hunt thriller Twister. Tom Cruise featured in both Mission: Impossible and Jerry Maguire, two of the biggest movies of the year.

Technology moves forward

The popularity of the internet rose considerably – in the space of 12 months, the number of internet host computers went from one million to 10 million. Smartphones are the norm in 2017, but the original smartphone is believed to have been invented back in 1996! Nokia’s 9000 Communicator was the first product in the Communicator series, with a revolutionary 8MB of memory which was split between applications, program memory and user data. The smallest and lightest phone to date was released too, when the Motorola StarTAC was the original flip phone that we were dreaming of back in ’96.

How times have changed – we were playing Nintendo 64 and shaking our hips to the Macarena back in 1996. Online casinos were beginning to gain popularity, following their invention just two years earlier. There were only 15 online casino sites back in 1996, which would rise to 200 a year later. Now, we have so many options for playing online – so take your pick of a game today at Lucky Nugget Casino.
