Eight Reasons Why Blackjack Players Lose…

Blackjack isn’t exactly a tricky game, we know that much is true, but some people really do know how to lose. They’re the kind of know it alls who think they can swan into a casino, chuck down a load of money and walk out richer than gods. Well, we’ll be honest, here at Lucky Nugget Casino we don’t want you to fall victim to the same mistakes. That’s why we’re going to take a look at some of the most common blackjack mistakes. Take a look below for all the information that you need!

1) Check the rules before you play!

There’s a common fault at hand when people play blackjack and it’s they simply don’t know the rules. Punters head on into a casino all confident with the impression that card games are easy and they don’t need to know the rules, only to realise that an ace is worth 11 or 1 and they’ve just stuck with ace-5, because they thought they were sixteen instead of sixteen and six.

Not knowing the rules is only half the battle though, as some tables have their own specific set of rules. In some variations of blackjack dealers can stand on a soft seventeen, while some other tables only pay out 6/5 for blackjack, instead of paying out the regular 3/2. On some other tables doubling is restricted to 10 or 11 only, which again, is not beneficial to the player. Your regular casino manager isn’t going to point these rules out to you, so make sure you check the rules out before you get started. Playing at a bad table will just ruin you, so don’t bother wasting your time on bad blackjack tables!

2) Not using basic strategy…

Blackjack is not a game of luck. Well, maybe it is a little bit, but it certainly has an element of skill as well. If your play is inconsistent, and by that we mean you change tactics in recurring situations, then you’re playing blackjack wrong. So, for example, if you had two identical situations where you have a 16 and the dealer has 10, and you haven’t hit both times, then you need to change your play. Consistency is absolutely key to this game, and we’re going to help you out with that.

If the dealer can only stand on hard 17 (which is the kind of blackjack you must play to stand any chance) then the guide above will help you out. Take a look at what you’ve got on the left hand column and match it with what the dealers showing. If the intersecting section is green then hit, if it’s blue then double down and if it’s grey – and it’s possible – then surrender. Honestly, it’s the only blackjack strategy chart you’ll ever need. Make the most of it!

3) Betting progressions simply don’t work…

Nearly everybody in the betting stratosphere has heard of the Martingale System, where you double your bet until you win. Unfortunately for the Martingale System, the green number on the roulette wheel completely rubbishes the system. The same goes for any progressive system related to blackjack. You can’t win with a betting system, they are null and void; the reason for this is that every situation is statistically independent and doesn’t depend on the previous event. This means that losing in the last game won’t make it any more likely that you’ll win the next event. Being dealt a load of dud hands doesn’t mean you’ll be dealt a load of great hands. Gambling doesn’t balance out. That’s why it’s so important that you adopt a great strategy, because without it you’re all out of luck!

4) Increasing bets because you are due a win

This stems from the last point and is essentially the same message; previous results do not affect future rewards. Plenty of casino players think that blackjack is a 50-50 gamble and if they lose several times in a row the next hand will be a winner. Through this, they place a big bet on the next hand and would you believe it, they lose again. Frustrated and adamant that the odds are going to swing in their favour, they end up placing an even bigger bet and again, they lose. This carries on until they either get lucky or go bankrupt! So don’t do it, use your head an keep calm when things are going wrong.

5) Playing on a blackjack table with a continuous shuffling machine

CMS, or a Constant Shuffling Machine, is a device used by casinos to 1) increase the speed you play blackjack and 2) discourage card counters who depend on hand shuffled decks. Basically, instead of waiting around for a dealer to shuffle, the machine does it while the dealer well, deals. This results in a higher play rate per hour and thus increasing the amount the casino takes in through house edge. Make sure you play at table without one of these dreadful machines and you’ll end swinging the house odds closer to a level playing-field.

6) Even money blackjack tables should be avoided like the plague…

Some blackjack tables payout 3/2 for every instance of blackjack, which is a fair and standard rate. Unfortunately, and this is rate but still, some tables will try and payout 6/5, or even 1-1 for blackjack, which is absolutely insane. If you end up playing with these odds you’re letting the house edge creep up to ridiculous levels. In a single deck game the house edge sky-rockets to 1.39% if the casino pays 6-5, or 2.3% if evens is paid out. It is common to see 6-5 returns for blackjack on a multi-hand table, and if you end up in a party pit, they will try and pay evens for blackjack. Essentially, you’re paying for the eye candy in the party pit. Don’t make the error of playing at one of these tables, avoid them like the plague. Instead stick to 3-2 blackjack, or just play something else.

7) Always making the insurance bet…

Insurance bets are one of the biggest scams ever invented by the casino. They have fooled players into thinking that it’s a great bet – hence the name ‘insurance’ – when in fact it’s not great at all. All you’re doing is betting on whether the dealer has a 10 in the hole. This should be treated as a side bet. It’s complete guesswork as you don’t know what card the dealer has (unless you’re card counting, then you’re fine to place the insurance bet). Ultimately, you should refuse to take the insurance bet and instead and take your chances, because there’s a good chance the dealer doesn’t actually have blackjack!

8) Don’t play when smashed…

If you’re leathered after a heavy drinking session and you fancy going to the casino, don’t. Tiredness and being drunk are the two main ways of losing money at the casino. Tired people play sloppy and drunk people make crazy decisions without thought. It’s part of the reason why casinos hand out free drinks. Essentially, it’s an investment for the casino who hope you take advantage of the freebies. Same goes with the food, where if they keep you eating inside the building you’re probably going to stay. So do yourself a favour and play blackjack sober with a nice cup of coffee.
